President Haas: What’s Next?

Without institutions like Grand Valley State University, West Michigan would be unable to move forward in the manner that it has. This past week Grand Valley President Dr. Thomas Haas completed the latest chapter in his career, retiring as GVSU’s fourth president. He capped a thirteen year tenure at GVSU marked by an unending focus on students, the addition of numerous academic programs, many new academic and co-curricular facilities and serving as a leader who connected education with business and the community in a way that I consider be simply remarkable.

When President Haas entered a room, while it was clear who was in charge, however he also made everyone feel at ease and involved in the conversation (see the ever popular “T-Haas selfie” with Tom and our lovely spouses Marcia and Connie at his retirement party ;-). He took particular care in welcoming us to West Michigan and did everything in his power to help me succeed in my current role. He exemplifies the often repeated Charles Marshall quote of a person who does the right thing when no one is looking.

Thank you and congratulations to an outstanding colleague and mentor, Dr. Thomas Haas!
