Debt Forgiveness at Muskegon

During the last several months, I have communicated primarily via social media outlets and in person to share happenings on and around campus.  This time, I am adding a good old fashioned blog post to highlight our latest news.  I hope that you, particularly some of our former students, will enjoy this post outlining our most recent effort to support financial access to the classroom.

Former Muskegon Community College students, who have financial holds up to $1,200 with MCC and who have not been enrolled at MCC for three academic years, are being encouraged to re-enroll under an initiative called the MCC Debt Forgiveness Program. Qualified students may be eligible to have their debt forgiven. In addition to the above requirements, students must also possess and maintain a 2.0 GPA and commit to ongoing support services available to help them achieve their academic goals.

Led by MCC Provost Dr. John Selmon and his team of dedicated student success professionals, the debt forgiveness initiative is designed to get former MCC students, who have left because of a debt owed to the college, to return so that they can graduate with a valuable credential.

Moreover, Muskegon Community College has adults in our region with some college coursework but no degree, and we have others who have not attended college at all.  We are addressing the former group by reaching out to those adults who need to complete their degree or certificate at MCC in order to enter or to remain in the workforce. Much like our Jayhawk Hub, we want to assure that as many support services are available to our students, and our MCC Debt Forgiveness Program is another cog in this important wheel.

Eligible students for the MCC Debt Forgiveness Program, once approved, must sign a contract for re-enrollment and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Students must have a completed FAFSA on file and a means to pay current charges.  They will be required to participate in a program geared to provide a wide arrange of support services to maximize their opportunity for success.  Students who agree to this contract and fulfill it will have their past due balance reduced incrementally over three semesters.

To apply for the MCC Debt Forgiveness Program, one must complete and submit the online application form available at While application submission does not guarantee acceptance into the MCC Debt Forgiveness Program we strongly urge any former eligible student to consider this opportunity.
