Thanks for an Extraordinary Year, MCC!

By any measure, Muskegon Community College’s 2015-16 academic year was a rousing success. Given the many accomplishments of our community, it has been, from my perspective, an extraordinary year.

As has been the case in the past, these achievements are united by our commitment to support our students, to strengthen our academic profile, and to grow our local and regional economy.

Our award-winning MCC students were named to the Phi Theta Kappa 2016 All-Michigan Academic Team, placed third place at Regional Foundry Casting Competition vying against four-year colleges and universities, were invited to participate in a National Undergraduate Research Symposium in Tennessee, and won many conference, regional and national athletics honors. Just this past week, Instructor Kathy Liefer and her colleagues hosted the 2016 MCC Computer Aided Design/Drafting Contest, drawing students from Holland to Fremont.  And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks to our outstanding faculty and staff, our students learn from the best in classes offered not only on the main campus, but at our locations in Ottawa and Newaygo counties, as well as internationally from Belize to the Caribbean island nation of Nevis.

We are reaching beyond our main campus with the construction of the MCC Downtown Center and the opening of the MCC Lakeshore Fitness Center, an adaptive use of the former Muskegon Family YMCA. Our successful regional collaboration and partnership efforts to create a Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program earned MCC a prestigious statewide 2016 Michigan Works! Impact Award.

College fundraising continues at a brisk pace. We have secured multiple academic program grants and gifts, as well as a landmark $5.6 million dollar planning grant from the State of Michigan to assist in the construction of the MCC Health and Wellness Center on campus. Improvements continue to be made on the recently acquired Lakeshore Fitness Center.  I highly recommend that you visit the LFC, located at the former Muskegon YMCA, and perhaps even undergo a fitness assessment (I did yesterday). It was a great experience all around.

By creating a skilled talent pool and state-of-the-art facilities in which our students may learn, MCC makes a valuable contribution not only to the lives and careers of our students but also to the economic prosperity and quality of life for all residents. This underscores the excellent return on investment MCC provides to the entire state.

On behalf of the entire campus community, I thank you for your continued support. By working together, we are making an extraordinary difference in the lives of our students and our community.
