Students, Faculty, Staff, and Community:

On behalf of the Administration and Board of Trustees of Muskegon Community College, I am pleased and honored to welcome you to MCC this fall semester.  MCC is a College where students succeed, faculty fuel their passion and employers find the best talent that higher education has to offer.  The past year was filled with notable achievements and the coming year portends to yield many more.

During the past academic year, students such as Kathy Davis and Eric Howard demonstrated yet again that Muskegon Community College students are among the strongest in the nation.  Faculty members Darren Mattone and Al Thomas demonstrated that our students are capable of a high level of theoretical and applied research.

The College also secured a $24 million in bonding authority to construct facilities identified in the 2010-15 Facilities Master Plan. We also secured a $4.6 million capital outlay appropriation from the State of Michigan to support construction of the MCC Science Center building and upgrades to existing science space on campus.  Thanks to the voters of Muskegon County and the MCC campus community for helping make both of the funding opportunities come to fruition.

Here’s what is in store for the 2014 – 15 academic year:

Now that dollars are secured for our infrastructure enhancements, things are starting to move quickly on individual building projects:

  • At noon on Wednesday September 3rd, groundbreaking will take place for the MCC Science Center in the Stevenson Center Courtyard
  • Kingscott/BMA and Plante Moran are moving forward on the Health Center demographic and architectural analysis to help the College finalize community and College need for our health facility upgrade
  • The College is in final negotiations on acquiring space for the MCC Downtown Center with an announcement expected upon completion of legal documents
  • A webpage chronicling progress on all infrastructure projects has been uploaded to http://www.muskegoncc.edu/build

On campus, the usual assortment of activities are taking place.

  • Fall classes begin on Monday, August 25th.  For students, as Dr. Selmon says, “there’s still time to become a Jayhawk,” so check here to see what classes are available
  • The 50th Annual MCC Student Art and Design Exhibition is ongoing
  • The popular Muskegon Community College Labor Lecture Series, which debuted last year, returns to campus for the Fall 2014 semester (thanks Nick and colleagues)
  • Thanks to the MCC Faculty Association, the Distinguished Faculty Award has returned to MCC after a decade long absence.  Recipient Dr. Daniel Yakes entertained a crowd of faculty, staff, retirees, and MCC Trustees today in Collegiate Hall.  Thanks to the Faculty Association for bringing back this important tradition.

Finally, I have two sets of two (2) tickets to the MCC sponsored Alexander Zonjic Shoreline Jazz Festival this weekend.  One set is for Saturday and the other is for Sunday.  Headliners include Zonjic, Boney James, Rueben Studdard, Lalah Hathaway, and Kenny G.  The tickets are going to the first two persons responding to this email/blog post.  Let’s see how many folks read this far down ;-).

Thank you for your time and Welcome Back!
