Student Eric Howard – 2014 All USA Selection

As the Winter Semester of 2014 winds up, I wanted to expand on some news that you already know.

MCC Nursing Student Eric Howard was selected as a 2014 USA Today All-USA Community College Academic Team member (http://www.muskegoncc.edu/pages/2833.asp?item=7888).  Eric is one of twenty students from around the nation selected to the All-USA Academic Team.  As 6.5 million students attend community colleges, this is an incredible accomplishment.  Eric is the first MCC student so recognized in the 88 year history of the College.  He is a four time MCC Student Government Association President, a Phi theta Kappa honor society member, and an active member of the MCC Sustainability Task Force.  In his “spare time” he volunteers as a mentor with Michigan State University’s 4-H STEM programs, serves as the student representative on the Student Services Council, and coaches 5-18 year old swimmers.

Eric was also a student leader in organizing the recently passed MCC ballot question, funding our new science building and other infrastructure upgrades.  In real world work terms, Eric and his supporters organized the canvassing of neighborhoods and distributed over 10,000 pieces of literature around Muskegon County.  Yes indeed, 10,000 pieces of literature.

When I called Eric to share the good news about the All-USA award, he was working one of his many jobs, serving as a nanny for families in the area.  He actually had three kids keeping him busy as he took the call ;-).  That is a sign of a young person with focus, determination, and a positive attitude.

All in all, my life is better for having met Eric (and his parents). There are literally thousands of stories being told by our students at MCC.  They are what keep me going.  Thanks Eric!  Thanks Students!
